In 1982, I attended my first NGS Annual Conference, which was held in Indianapolis that year. I was impressed by the fact that folks came from far and wide to talk about the many and varied facets of genealogy, and genealogical research. In fact, I hadn't realized that there were so many sides to my "hobby" until I attended that conference. Since then, I have been to more than half of the NGS Annual Conferences, held in various locales around the country.

I became a member of the NGS in the early 1980s, and was impressed by their publications. I donated money to help purchase Glebe House, which became the NGS headquarters after they left Sunderland Place, in downtown Washington, DC. In 1987, I gave my first lecture at an NGS Conference, which was held in Raleigh, NC that year. I took my honorarium, added a little to it, and became a Life Member.

In 1992, I was elected to be a Councilor At Large on the NGS Council. My term ended 31-May-1996. Serving on the NGS Council was a big step up from serving on the Board of the KGS. Lots of details in running the NGS, but also lots of fun, just being in the fray.

The NGS Annual Conference was in Nashville, Tennessee, May 8th-11th, in 1996. The 1997 Conference was in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and in 1998, was in Denver, Colorado. Contact the NGS for details on upcoming conferences. Hope to see you there.
